“filthy silky” six-string guitar
Our very first six-string guitar build, this was custom-built for my friend Adam who is a big fan of modern prog metal and epic math rock. The brief was for a very hot, high-output instrument which could meet the demands of the modern shredder while retaining an understated and refined design. We selected a beautiful cap of Silky Oak, well over a hundred years old, salvaged from an antique dresser which had been damaged in the Brisbane floods of 1974. Complete with authentic nail- and screw-holes, remnants of paint and borers, this piece of timber is just stunning, and is the centrepiece of the instrument. An elegant light River Oak fretboard carries marker inlays of aluminium and crushed Black Opal. This instrument straddles the worlds of authentic, elegant refinement and absolute filthy sludge metal, like the mud of the ‘74 flood, but also plays sparkling clean tones, like ummm…you know, clear mountain spring water or some shit.
